MALE TESTING INFORMATION

In general, older men have lower testosterone levels than younger men. Starting at the age of 30, testosterone levels in men begin to decline approximately 10% each decade. At the same time, a protein in the body called SHBG "Sex Hormone Binding Globulin" begins increasing which has a negative affect on free testosterone levels. SHBG binds to most of the testosterone that is still circulating within the body and makes it unavailable to exert its effects in the body's tissues. The remaining testosterone is know as "bio-available" or free testosterone and is considered by medical experts as the best indicator of a man's true testosterone level. Andropause is associated with low "bio-available" testosterone levels.

While every man experiences a decline of "bio-available" testosterone some men experience greater reductions than others. As men continue to age and reach the age of forty to mid fifties, they can begin experiencing andropause which is a phenomenon similar to female menopause. However unlike menopause, which generally occurs in women during their mid-forties to mid-fifties, mens hormonal changes may be much more gradual and expand over many decades. Age related decline in testosterone levels are also called testosterone deficiency and androgen decline in aging male. Although with age, a decline in testosterone levels will occur in virtually all men, there is no way of predicting who will experience andropausal symptoms, the severity or at what age symptoms will occur.
